About TCL

Clerkship rotations mark the beginning of future physicians’ ‘firsts’—the first time hearing a rare murmur, welcoming a newborn into the world, grieving the loss of a patient, saving a life, and an array of other experiences that are unique to medicine. Although thrilling, the extent of novelty can become overwhelming. In each institution, there is a space of escape to comprehend the occurrences of the day: the clerk lounge. With its unattractive sofas and semi-functional coffee machines, it serves as a place of solace and connection with others who understand.

In this photo essay, clerks recount meaningful patient encounters that will inevitably shape them, both as physicians and as humans.  These photos were shot on Ilford XP2 400 35mm film. This is the first photo essay I composed and the inconsistencies in the photographs mirror the uncertainties of the students’ as they navigate this new adventure.

The purpose of these photos is to capture this milestone in our medical training. My sincere thanks to my friends and colleagues for sharing their stories and for allowing me to experience them.
